Physics of magnetized dusty plasmas

Abstract In this review, we summarize recent advances in the field of dusty plasmas at strong magnetic fields. Special emphasis is put on situations where experimental laboratory observations are available. These generally comprise with magnetized electrons and ions, but unmagnetized dust. The fundamental parameters characterizing a (dusty) plasma given various effects under fields presented. As examples, reaction dust component to magnetic-field modified properties, such as filamentation, imposed structures, rotation, nanodusty resulting forces discussed. Further, behavior charge described shown be relatively unaffected by Wake formation discharges illustrated: strength wake found reduced increased field. propagation acoustic waves experimentally measured analyzed indicating that wave dynamics not heavily influenced Only highest ( $$B> 1$$ B > 1 T) activity reduced. Moreover, it discussed how dust-cyclotron might used indicate component. Finally, implications illustrated.

This paper highlights some of the history of laboratory experiments in dusty plasmas, beginning with an early unexpected discovery of Langmuir.
